4 TexasHealthHuguley.org Advanced spine care: Get back to living your life Skilled experts. Advanced technology. Personal navigation. When spine pain strikes, it can stop you from enjoying your favorite activities—or even simple tasks. Turn to the experts at Texas Health Huguley Hospital for help restoring your quality of life. Texas Health Huguley offers comprehensive spine care and the latest treatments. To support you, a spine care nurse navigator will guide you through every step of your healthcare journey. Oh, my aching back! Back pain is a common condition, affecting up to 8 out of 10 people at some point. That’s not surprising when you consider the complicated structure of the lower spine, which consists of five vertebrae and other tissues that support your back. Ruptured disks, spinal canal narrowing and spinal instability are just a few things that can go wrong with the spine, leading to back and sometimes leg pain. Spine problems aren’t just limited to the lower back. Diseases and injuries can trigger neck pain, too, when they occur in the neck area of the spine. Feel whole again Texas Health Huguley offers solutions for pain, which doesn’t always mean surgery and downtime. In fact, many people find relief through physical therapy, medications or injections. “There are many treatment options available, and those are individually tailored to our patients’ unique needs and recovery goals,” says Maliah Kelley, MSN, RN, Orthopedics/ Spine Service Line Manager at Texas Health Huguley. If surgery is the best approach to your back or spine problem, you’ll be glad to know Texas Health Huguley is home to traditional and minimally invasive spine surgeries to help you find relief. More advanced procedures In addition to an alreadyimpressive range of current capabilities, the hospital recently started offering robotic and endoscopic spine procedures. Endoscopic spine surgery uses a tiny camera (scope) and very small instruments and incisions—much like arthroscopic hip and knee procedures, says Orthopedic Spine Surgeon Jarren Section, MD. Robotic spine surgery assists the surgeon in creating special surgical plans that allow for highly accurate placement of spine hardware. Less muscle and tissue are cut or separated with robotic spine surgery, “which decreases the overall post-surgery pain associated with the procedure,” Dr. Section says. Beyond back pain Maybe it’s not your back but your feet, knees, hips or hands that are hurting. Texas Health Huguley offers a wide range of orthopedic services, from podiatric care to joint replacements. “All the joint replacement surgeons are trained in robotic surgery,” says Orthopedic Surgeon Gurpreet Bajaj, MD. “Patients recover faster and, more importantly, their joints will last longer because we’re able to be more precise.”
Fall 2024 5 A picture of health: Advanced imaging close to home When your doctor orders a medical imaging test, you want the latest technology and a skilled team for an accurate diagnosis. You’ll find these things and more at Texas Health Huguley Hospital. The facility is home to advanced imaging options, including: Bone density scans. Bone densitometry uses low doses of X-rays to measure bone density for the early detection of osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease. CT scans. CT uses X-rays and computers to create detailed, cross-sectioned images of the body that can be viewed as 3D slices. Texas Health Huguley can scan the heart’s arteries for calcium buildup, which can be a marker for heart disease risk. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI scanners use magnets and radio waves to capture images of the body. Each of Texas Health Huguley’s three scanners has a large opening, which helps patients feel comfortable. Nuclear medicine. Radioactive tracers are used to assess organ function and diagnose and treat diseases. Providers at Texas Health Huguley even use nuclear brain scans to help evaluate people for Lewy body dementia. Interventional radiology (IR). Specialists use imaging and minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat conditions. For instance, IR experts guide biopsies, remove clots from arteries and more. Lung cancer screening. If you’re a current or former smoker, you may qualify for a yearly lung cancer screening with a low-dose CT chest scan. Screenings are available year-round. In addition, Texas Health Huguley will offer free lung screenings to eligible first responders and military personnel for two weekends during November. Call 817.551.2787 to learn more. Fall 2024 7 Time for your mammogram? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Mammograms are our best defense against breast cancer. These tests can help find breast cancer early, improving the chances of successful treatment. Talk to your doctor about regular screening for breast cancer starting at age 40—or sooner if you have a family history of the disease. Texas Health Huguley Hospital offers 3D mammography for advanced breast imaging. A 3D mammogram creates multiple images of the breast tissue, similar to the images a CT scan makes. Experts can view breast tissue in layers, making abnormal areas easier to detect. “The image quality is exceptional,” says Lucinda Morton, RT(R)(M), Radiology Manager. What to expect You will need to undress from the waist up. Your care team will provide a gown for comfort. For the exam, pressure will be applied to each breast. This only takes a moment. The mammogram technologist will then take two or three images of each breast. To help ensure a better mammogram experience: ● Try not to have your mammogram the week before or during your period, as your breasts are more likely to be tender or swollen during this time. ● Do not wear deodorant, lotion or perfume to your mammogram, as these may interfere with the image. “We’re here to help guide you through the entire process,” Lucinda says. “We have very compassionate and caring mammogram techs who want to provide the best experience for you.” The best in breast care Texas Health Huguley is home to fellowship-trained radiologists and surgeons along with the latest breast cancer treatments, including lumpectomy, mastectomy and breast reconstruction. (A lumpectomy is a surgery to remove just the tumor instead of the whole breast.) A breast care navigator will guide you. “You’re not alone in the journey,” says Stephanie Banda, RN, BSN, MBA, Administrative Director of Surgical Services. “You have someone to walk you through the process every step of the way.” Make an appointment Texas Health Huguley offers $99 mammograms for patients without insurance. To schedule a mammogram, call 817.551.2787, scan the QR code or visit TexasHealthHuguley.org/ Mammogram. You can also contact the breast care navigator at 817.568.5431.
