Winter 2023 3 Proudly serving since the ’70s Still growing after all these years Star Wars was a new hit movie, and Jimmy Carter was president the year Texas Health Huguley opened its doors to serve the community. The facility is still growing after nearly 47 years, but how did the hospital come about? “[Texas Health] Huguley exists due to the generosity of Dr. Huguley,” says Russ Weaver, Vice President of Mission, Community, and Government Advocacy. He’s talking about Herbert Taylor Huguley, D.D.S., a Dallas dentist. When he passed away, Dr. Huguley left funds to the Seventh-day Adventist Church to buy land and build a hospital in honor of his parents. Although growth was on the way, the hospital’s site next to I-35W in south Fort Worth looked much different than it does today. “There were fields and cows out here, and that was about it,” Russ says. Texas Health Huguley Hospital opened in February 1977 as Huguley Memorial Medical Center, a member of AdventHealth (called Adventist Health System until 2019). In 2012, Texas Health Resources and AdventHealth formed a joint venture partnership, with AdventHealth managing the daily operations. Expansion in the 21st century In 2016, Texas Health Huguley added a six-story patient care tower to meet the needs of its growing community. A second tower (set to open in January 2024) will house a new, larger emergency department and medical intensive care unit. A culture of service Today, Texas Health Huguley is a state-of-the-art, full-service, acute care hospital providing the latest in technology and advanced medical care. The mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ while providing whole-person care.
