Winter 2023 7 Mental health services for teens 4 ways a gastroenterologist can help you Colorectal cancer screening is one of them Good digestive health is an essential part of wellness. A gastrointestinal (GI) health condition can affect your quality of life. It may take a gastroenterologist like Akeem Adebogun, M.D., to help you feel whole again. “I provide compassionate and evidence-based care to help my patients achieve the best outcomes and live their best lives,” Dr. Adebogun says. For example, a GI doctor can: Diagnose an ongoing problem. A few good reasons to see a GI doctor are heartburn, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and changes in bowel habits. Perform advanced procedures. One example is an endoscopy. Dr. Adebogun subspecializes in minimally invasive procedures for treating problems with the bile duct, pancreatic duct and other areas of the digestive tract that can’t be reached with standard endoscopy. Manage digestive diseases, such as acid reflux, stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids and ulcerative colitis. Screen you for colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy allows doctors to find and remove growths (polyps) that may become cancerous. Experts recommend getting screened starting at age 45 (earlier if you have risk factors). “Colonoscopies can also detect colon cancer early, when it is still very curable,” Dr. Adebogun says. All teens need and deserve good mental health. When they’re struggling, they can turn to Texas Health Huguley for compassionate, expert help. At Texas Health Huguley, services include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for teens ages 13 to 17. It’s designed to help with depression, anxiety, self-harm, schizophrenia, substance abuse and other mental health issues. Teens attend the program Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for up to two weeks. Tailored treatments include talk therapy (counseling) and medication management. Patients will be treated by a team that consists of a psychiatrist, a master’s level counselor and registered nurses. “We use a family systems approach, which means parents are involved in the care,” says Robert Garza, LPC, LCDC, Clinical Manager for Behavioral Health. The PHP helps teens manage their symptoms and learn coping skills. “We want to get them back to where they can live, laugh and love to the best of their abilities,” Robert says. Texas Health Huguley also offers an intensive outpatient treatment program in the evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. to help teens with mental health issues. The hospital offers free mental health screenings to teens as well.
