4 TexasHealthHuguley.org Solutions for spine and orthopedic pain Jennifer North, RN, B.S.N., loves helping people find the relief for back or neck pain they’ve sought for years. “I’ve had people say, ‘I’ve never felt better,’” she says. “And that makes me feel great, because if we weren’t here to help navigate them, I’m not sure they would know where to go.” As a spine care navigator at Texas Health Huguley, Jennifer helps guide and inform patients seeking diagnosis and treatment. Her colleague, Clarissa Lopez, LVN, is the navigator who puts people in touch with orthopedic care. If you’re hurting—from your neck to your knees, your shoulders to your feet—know that comprehensive spine and orthopedic care are available at Texas Health Huguley, in partnership with Lone Star Orthopaedic and Spine Specialists.

Summer 2023 5 Soothing a sore spine Texas Health Huguley offers many solutions to help people living with back and neck pain caused by conditions such as degenerative disk disease, bulging disks, pinched nerves, sciatica and spinal stenosis. Often, the care starts with conservative treatments. “It could be something as simple as having physical therapy,” Jennifer says. “We can also refer patients to our pain management doctors, who can provide oral medications, muscle medications and nerve medications, as well as spine injections and nerve blocks.” If your pain persists, you may be a candidate for surgery, such as: ● Lumbar laminectomy ● Lumbar and cervical spine fusions ● Kyphoplasty for vertebrae fractures If you are referred to spine care or if you schedule a consultation, Jennifer will help guide you every step of the way. “I like to treat people like family,” she says. “My goal is to not just navigate you through the care, but to help you understand what could be contributing to your pain and to listen to you. People want to be listened to.” After asking people about their medical history and symptoms, Jennifer guides them to the services most likely to benefit them. She can facilitate an appointment, answer your questions and assist throughout your diagnosis, treatment and recovery. All the services needed for your spine care journey are here, including diagnostic imaging, pain management, physical therapy and surgery. Getting you moving again Texas Health Huguley is home to orthopedic and podiatric diagnostic and treatment services, such as imaging, physical therapy, pain management and surgery. “We help patients find a solution that’s going to help them,” Clarissa says. “We have a network we can connect with to find what is going to best fit your needs.” Clarissa can help connect you to care for a wide range of conditions that may be limiting your mobility and causing pain. These include: ● Sports injuries ● Arthritis ● Diabetes foot care ● Carpal tunnel syndrome ● Shoulder problems ● Hip and knee pain When surgery is recommended, options range from minimally invasive knee arthroscopy (done with a tiny camera placed inside the knee) to total joint replacements. Like Jennifer, Clarissa is there to guide your orthopedic journey from diagnosis to healing. “It puts patients at ease when they know exactly what to expect and that they can always reach out to me,” she says. 6 TexasHealthHuguley.org COLORECTAL CANCER Early detection is key Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in the United States. Fortunately, the disease is highly preventable, treatable and easy to detect. Colonoscopies are the key. These are screening tests that can detect colorectal cancer before symptoms even start. In addition, they allow your doctor to find and remove polyps in the colon before they become cancerous. “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening,” says Akeem Adebogun, M.D., a gastroenterologist at Texas Health Huguley Hospital. “They help us find and remove polyps all at once. That way, patients can get back to being the healthiest versions of themselves faster.” It is recommended that people 45 years and older receive a colorectal cancer screening. Those at higher risk should start even earlier and may need to be tested more often. “You are at higher risk if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps,” Dr. Adebogun says. “Having ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease is another reason to get screened sooner rather than later.” Digestive care that keeps you healthy and whole Digestive care experts at Texas Health Huguley can offer more than lifesaving colonoscopies. They can determine the cause of digestive symptoms and help manage disorders such as diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn, gallstones, pancreatitis, hemorrhoids or Crohn’s disease. “We can perform advanced diagnostic tests and minimally invasive procedures for a quicker recovery,” Dr. Adebogun says. “Our goal is to get any digestive condition under control using personalized care so our patients can leave feeling better than when they first come to us.” Do I need a colonoscopy? Colorectal cancer is a common and serious cancer. As you reach middle age, you should begin regular screening. Am I at risk? Risk factors for colon cancer include: ● Being 50 or older ● Excessive alcohol use ● Being very overweight ● Physical inactivity ● Smoking ● A diet high in processed or red meat The American Cancer Society recommends regular colorectal cancer screening for everyone from age 45 to 75. However, you may want to consider earlier screening if you have: ● A family history of the disease ● Inherited conditions ● Inflammatory bowel disease Screening options A colonoscopy, in which your provider examines the entire colon using a flexible tube that has a camera, is a well-known screening. Other options include: ● Stool tests ● Sigmoidoscopy ● CT colonography Your primary care provider can help you choose the best tests (and testing frequency) for you. Stop cancer before it starts. Call 682.268.6670 to schedule a colonoscopy with Dr. Adebogun.
