Winter 2023 3 Proudly serving since the ’70s Still growing after all these years Star Wars was a new hit movie, and Jimmy Carter was president the year Texas Health Huguley opened its doors to serve the community. The facility is still growing after nearly 47 years, but how did the hospital come about? “[Texas Health] Huguley exists due to the generosity of Dr. Huguley,” says Russ Weaver, Vice President of Mission, Community, and Government Advocacy. He’s talking about Herbert Taylor Huguley, D.D.S., a Dallas dentist. When he passed away, Dr. Huguley left funds to the Seventh-day Adventist Church to buy land and build a hospital in honor of his parents. Although growth was on the way, the hospital’s site next to I-35W in south Fort Worth looked much different than it does today. “There were fields and cows out here, and that was about it,” Russ says. Texas Health Huguley Hospital opened in February 1977 as Huguley Memorial Medical Center, a member of AdventHealth (called Adventist Health System until 2019). In 2012, Texas Health Resources and AdventHealth formed a joint venture partnership, with AdventHealth managing the daily operations. Expansion in the 21st century In 2016, Texas Health Huguley added a six-story patient care tower to meet the needs of its growing community. A second tower (set to open in January 2024) will house a new, larger emergency department and medical intensive care unit. A culture of service Today, Texas Health Huguley is a state-of-the-art, full-service, acute care hospital providing the latest in technology and advanced medical care. The mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ while providing whole-person care. When you walk through the doors, you will find people of many faiths and cultures serving patients and co-workers like family while following four service standards: Love Me, Keep Me Safe, Own It and Make It Easy. “Showing people we love and value them while delivering high-quality healthcare is how we live out Christ’s healing ministry,” Russ says. 4 TexasHealthHuguley.org New critical care tower set to receive first patient An expansion project that will help Texas Health Huguley meet the growing region’s need for healthcare is set to reach a milestone on January 24. That’s when the hospital expects to welcome the first patient to the new critical care tower. In February 2022, crews broke ground on the fourstory patient tower that will double the size of the emergency department and provide additional space for the critical care unit. The expansion project is a $75 million investment in the community as more and more patients seek healthcare services. A larger emergency department will provide more capacity and enhanced patient experiences. “We’re excited to have that additional space and to be able to serve our community as it continues to grow,” says Chief Nursing Officer Tammy Ellis. New, advanced technology will enhance the quality of care in the ICU. One example is a new patient lifting system for safe patient transfers. The ICU and its highly specialized team will continue to have state-of-the-art bedside monitoring, ventilators and other 24-hour intensive care tools. New dining space, plus room for growth In addition to an expanded emergency room and new ICU, the new tower will have a spacious dining area for patients, visitors and team members. “It will have a bright and cheery atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy their meals,” Tammy says. Two shelled-out floors provide additional space for future expansion projects to help meet tomorrow’s needs. The 108,000-square-foot expansion isn’t just a growth strategy. “We have a heart for caring for our community, and we knew that it was time to do something different,” Tammy says. “We saw a need to make sure our patients had the best place to come and get their healthcare and feel really good about the care they received.” Get the latest updates Visit TexasHealthHuguley.org/LetsGrow.

Winter 2023 7 Mental health services for teens 4 ways a gastroenterologist can help you Colorectal cancer screening is one of them Good digestive health is an essential part of wellness. A gastrointestinal (GI) health condition can affect your quality of life. It may take a gastroenterologist like Akeem Adebogun, M.D., to help you feel whole again. “I provide compassionate and evidence-based care to help my patients achieve the best outcomes and live their best lives,” Dr. Adebogun says. For example, a GI doctor can: Diagnose an ongoing problem. A few good reasons to see a GI doctor are heartburn, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and changes in bowel habits. Perform advanced procedures. One example is an endoscopy. Dr. Adebogun subspecializes in minimally invasive procedures for treating problems with the bile duct, pancreatic duct and other areas of the digestive tract that can’t be reached with standard endoscopy. Manage digestive diseases, such as acid reflux, stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids and ulcerative colitis. Screen you for colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy allows doctors to find and remove growths (polyps) that may become cancerous. Experts recommend getting screened starting at age 45 (earlier if you have risk factors). “Colonoscopies can also detect colon cancer early, when it is still very curable,” Dr. Adebogun says. All teens need and deserve good mental health. When they’re struggling, they can turn to Texas Health Huguley for compassionate, expert help. At Texas Health Huguley, services include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for teens ages 13 to 17. It’s designed to help with depression, anxiety, self-harm, schizophrenia, substance abuse and other mental health issues. Teens attend the program Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for up to two weeks. Tailored treatments include talk therapy (counseling) and medication management. Patients will be treated by a team that consists of a psychiatrist, a master’s level counselor and registered nurses. “We use a family systems approach, which means parents are involved in the care,” says Robert Garza, LPC, LCDC, Clinical Manager for Behavioral Health. The PHP helps teens manage their symptoms and learn coping skills. “We want to get them back to where they can live, laugh and love to the best of their abilities,” Robert says. Texas Health Huguley also offers an intensive outpatient treatment program in the evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. to help teens with mental health issues.
